For at least the sixth time, Douglas Road students have practised the voting process through Student Vote, the parallel election made possible by Elections Canada. From kindergarten right through grade 7, more than 265 Firebirds cast ballots in our Burnaby Central electoral district along with 172,000 students in electoral districts across B.C.
Along with voters in the general election, student vote participants in the Burnaby Central district (and a majority of student voters at Douglas Road) chose to re-elect sitting NDP MLA, Anne Kang to the legislature. While the final count for the general election is still in progress, with several district races still too close to call, student vote results are in and are similar to what initial vote counts in the general election are showing. Students across the province would give 44 seats to the NDP; 40 seats to the Conservative Party, and 9 seats (almost a tenth of the legislature) to the Green Party.
