Welcome to Douglas Road

Douglas Road School opened its doors in 1928. We enrol students from Kindergarten to Grade seven. The school is located in Central West Burnaby and is approximately five blocks from Burnaby Central Secondary School. This school received a seismic upgrade in 2009 resulting in a fresh, new appearance inside and out, while maintaining the historical, brick exterior.

Douglas Road is a warm, welcoming school. Our mission is “meeting challenges in a changing world.” We do our best to educate children to be good citizens through our strong goal of Social Emotional Learning and we strive to create strong readers through our focus on Reading Comprehension.

Douglas Road School is proud of its strong academic program, multicultural atmosphere, genuine sense of pride and enthusiasm for learning in a fun, safe atmosphere. We try to create opportunities for students to grow in all aspects of their school career not only through academics but also through fine arts, extra-curricular sports and leadership opportunities. We continue to work with Burnaby Parks and Recreation to offer after school programs for students in our school.

We encourage parents to be involved in the school and welcome participation at our monthly Parent Advisory Council Meetings as well as through committee work throughout the school year. We want to hear from you as there are many ideas as to how to involve parents in the school as partners in creating rich experiences for children.  Our efforts have enabled us to fund the school’s adventure playground, support programs for each classroom, such as field trips, and help update technology available to support student learning.

The PAC was very proactive in establishing an on-site Daycare which offers before and after school care. The Douglas Road Neighbourhood Care, a program of Burnaby Neighbourhood House, is integral to our school community.  Through additional grants, we have been able to establish a grade 2 -3 and 4 – 7 friendship club on select days after school.

We hope you always feel welcome in the school as we all continue on our journey of life-long learning together.
